What is the Past National Commanders Scholarship?
The Detachment of Massachusetts offers three $1000.00 scholarships. The scholarships are named in honor of the three Sons of The American Legion members from Massachusetts that have served our organization as National Commander.
Who is eligible for the Past National Commanders Scholarship?.
Eligibility for the scholarships is open to all Massachusetts members of the Sons of The American Legion in good standing. (2022 dues must be paid at time of application submission)
What type of education qualifies for a scholarship?
- 4 year undergraduate program at a college or university.
- Community College.
- Post Graduate Technical School.
There are no age restrictions on applicants, all applicants are eligible each year prior to the completion of their degree or certificate. (maximum of 4 years)
How does the application and award process work?
- Applications can be downloaded at the link below.
- You will be required to submit an essay answering the question that is listed on this year's application.
- Application and essay can submitted via e mail (prefered) or by US mail to the address listed on application.
- Judging is conducted by a panel of your fellow SAL members and takes place the 1st week in May. Your essay constitutes 100% of the points to determine sholarship recipients. Recipients will be notified by phone.
- Award Recipients should be prepared to attend the Saturday morning awards ceremony at our state convention in Marlborough, MA in June to recieve your award.
