What is the Commander's Charitable Project?
The Commander's Charitable Project is a fundraiser for an American Legion Charity that is chosen by our Detachment Commander for his term in office.
What has the Commander chosen for his charity?
Commander Theroux has chosen The American Legion Veteran and Children's Foundation. The American Legion Veterans & Children’s Foundation delivers needed aid for military and veteran parents who face unexpected financial hardships that threaten the stability of their homes. One-time Temporary Financial Assistance grants are used to cover housing, utilities, food and other basic needs for families with minor children at home. The American Legion Veterans & Children’s Foundation also trains the organization’s army of accredited service officers who at any one time are continuously working more than 750,000 benefits claims for disabled veterans and their families, free of charge.
Commander Theroux a 38-year veteran of the United States Air Force and proud member of the Sons of The American Legion who earns his eligibility through his 2 grandfather’s service during WWI. Who were both charter members of The American Legion and his Fathers service in the Army during WWII. The commander feels very strongly about the commitment we owe our returning veterans, their families as well as the safety net the foundation provides. He is asking your squadron to join with him and your fellow Sons of The American Legion Squadrons from across Massachusetts in assisting to support the vital mission that The American Legion Veteran and Children’s Foundation carries out.
How can my squadron support this year's project?
We are asking every Squadron to dedicate a weekend between September of 2022 and May of 2023 as the “Commanders Project Weekend”. On this weekend hold an event or events to raise money to help support our veterans and their families through The American Legion Veterans and Children’s Foundation. All squadrons that participate in this year’s project will be recognized for their efforts at our Detachment Convention in Marlborough this June. The Squadron that makes the largest donation to the Commander’s Project will be recognized and awarded the very prestigious Commander’s Award, a travelling perpetual award that can be displayed at their Post during the 2022-2023 membership year and have your squadrons name and number engraved alongside the previous award recipients.
Please use the donation form in the link below. The deadline for sending in donations will be May 1, 2023. If you are planning an event and would like a representative of the Detachment to attend, please let me know.
Thank you for all you do to support our Veterans and their families. If you have any questions, please contact me.
